SHARED STUDY GUIDE
Chapter 2
hapter two of Maus, titled 'The Honeymoon,' transitions from the excitement of Vladek and Anja's early marriage to the dark reality of the approaching war. While the title suggests a period of bliss, the story quickly shifts to focus on health struggles and the first visible signs of the Nazi threat in Europe.
After their marriage, Vladek's father-in-law provides him with a textile factory in Bielsko. This period represents the peak of Vladek's economic success. He is a provider, a husband, and soon, a father. However, the birth of their first son, Richieu, brings an unexpected challenge.
Postpartum depression is a medical condition where a mother feels extreme sadness and exhaustion after childbirth. In Maus, Anja experiences this so severely that she becomes suicidal, saying, 'I just don't want to live.'
To help Anja recover, Vladek takes her to a high-end sanitarium in Czechoslovakia. Think of a sanitarium as a luxury recovery center or a specialized hospital where people go to rest and receive treatment for long-term illnesses. This journey is significant because it forces the couple to leave their protective bubble in Poland.
